Insurance & Legal protection

Have you found yourself in a dispute and need a lawyer?

Then you should first and foremost take advantage of the legal protection in your home insurance.

Legal protection

Legal protection insurance helps cover your legal costs for boat-related disputes as a private individual. Your own cost is typically around 20% of the total legal expenses, up to SEK 200,000 (in most insurance companies — check the specific terms of your policy).

Primarily, this applies to legal fees (your lawyer), the court application fee, and similar expenses, of which you will ultimately pay 20% if your insurance company has approved the legal protection coverage.

As a general rule, legal protection is granted for disputes exceeding half a price base amount, that is SEK 29,400 (the price base amount for 2025 is SEK 58,800).

Home and Property Insurance

Legal protection coverage is automatically included in almost all Swedish home, house, and holiday home insurance policies, as well as in comprehensive boat insurance and full or partial car insurance. The specific terms of your legal protection are outlined in your insurance policy documents or conditions.

You may also be covered through your trade union. Contact your insurance company if you have any questions regarding the terms or costs.

Business owners in the boating industry

If you are a business owner, you may use your business insurance, provided that it includes legal protection coverage. Check with your insurance company to confirm whether your policy includes this coverage and to learn more about its specific terms and scope.
